I’m not exactly big on monuments. Even when the internet wasn’t the way it is today, having seen one monument makes me feel like I’ve seen them all.

So when our cab took us to the Heritage of Cebu Foundation after looking at the Lapu-lapu Monument and Magellan’s Cross, I literally yawned and thought, “Oh no, not another one…” But not wanting to offend our driver, I dragged myself out of the back seat and got down.

Monument

After passing through the gate, the structure before me changed my mind and the way I look at monuments.

Which brings me to the first that won me over…

Remember I told you I wasn’t big on monuments? Well, from where I was standing, this one was big enough.

Monument

I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was huge, because there certainly are much bigger monuments out in the world. When I say it was big enough, it was just the right size for me to be able to see the details from a less than a meter away.

Which brings me to the second thing that won me over…

This thing was quite elaborate that I couldn’t help but stare at it. There was so much to see in it; so much detail that it can be overwhelming if you try to take it all in at once.

Which brings me to the third thing that won me over…

Monument

There was so much of the culture in it; so much of it compressed in the monument. It captured the past, the present, and maybe even the future of not just Cebu, but of the whole country. I could see myself, my family, my friends, and even the rest of the Philippines in it.

Which brings me to the fourth part that won me over…

Perhaps the artist Eduardo Castrillo had something else in mind when creating it. But to me it touched so levels that I came to realize how rich Philippines history and culture is.

Final Thoughts

Marker

We stayed for about half an hour and I felt that it was simply not enough time to take it all in. There was so much to see in it that even the pictures I took could not capture everything that I saw and felt.

Interestingly, this was not one for the sights I expected to see in our trip to Cebu. Even our cab driver took us here as an afterthought because we just happened to be passing by.

But I’m glad to have seen the Heritage of Cebu Foundation as it is one of the few things that actually capture the spirit of the Filipino people.

Till the next time, keep your appetites up, camera batteries fully charged, and your memory free because you may need them for the next place you visit!
